Setting
On the last shot in the bathroom the camera is left in the room with the shadow after the girls leave, this could emphasise loneliness to increase the scare it could also show that no one can help you.
The release of the film is in October, this could either be a coincidence or they planned for it to come out close to halloween.
The scary scenes are mainly based in darker areas, this could be a clue to the fact that the horror film genre is moving back in time before the 1970's and 80's, this is where most of the monsters lurked in the shadows and you were never really shown it.
Camerawork
handheld camerawork shows someone amateur is controlling the camera this could also connote that this person isnt proffessional, an average person with a camera to record family memories.
Canted angles when monsters appear, shows otherworldy properties towards this creature.
Non continuety shots, skipping scenes, could show that someone is watching or that the camera is broken (which could show that something bad has happened to whoever was filming with it)
Slow motion shots could show an emotional moment, a past experience, or perhaps a significant moment e.g. when she finds the picture of the girl, there are some shots from previous films which shows that there is more to the story.
The final shot in the bathroom is a very long shot, the large amount of time spent in the dark in this shot builds up alot of suspense (increases the scare) in fact here you would expect something to jump out at you, but nothing scary does its only at the end when the children leave the room when you realise that theres something evil in the room. This way of making the scene innocent with the joke of the girl scaring the other one calms the audience so theyre not ready for the scare.
The lighing difference when the children leave the bathroom allows the audience to see the shadow behind the camera.
Iconography
The dark areas show evil, loss of vision which panics most people, it also promote the horror genre. lighting is low-key and in high contrast to show facial expressions and shadows, specifically on the last shot.
The children could show that during this film the aspect of innocence will be used, this is emphasised in the last shot when the children
The objects in the mise-en-scene show a simple family home which connotes toward the horror is in your home and that this monster doesn't exist in the mortal world and is unbeatable, this also promotes the point of the monster haunting anyone.
Narrative Structure
Story of two twin protagonists (children), this trailer shows that the narrative relates back to previous films, short shots or flashbacks to scary moments in paranormal activity 1 and 2. A happy family which encounters a monster which then haunts them, this is a look back in time from the previous films where the kids are adults.
This trailer shows a film which is abstract in its own way, their is no hero shown in this trailer which promotes the point of an unbeatable antagonist. This trailer connotes towards barthe's theory of narrative with underlying mythical and immortal monsters.
Character types
Twin protagonists who have practically no normal attributes of heroes in other horror genre, they don't have strength however they do have courage which is shown through what they do in the last scene. In fact in the last shot the girls could be shown to be a mix between protagonists and antagonists because they're pulling scary pranks on each other.
Simple happy families show that nothing has effected them before, they do not deserve to be haunted, the innocence of the children and the environment could connote to something secret being buried in the family history like the theory on suburban areas being used in the horror genre.
The monster is not shown, pre prosthetic (170's / 80's) horror, you only see the effects and the actions it takes to harm innocent people, when the monster is on the scene there is usually a loud blurred noise in the background which emphasises the horror of it, this could also be used to scare your audience by not using it and the monster being seen.
Themes
Of the three old films that we have studied this film would be more to do with Dracula because this film doesn't show that the monster was a product of a scientific disaster or that it was a a product of a previous event. The idea that this is to do with the afterlife could be mixed with the jeckyll and hyde narrative, my idea is that a soul or demon has come to haunt them as a response of a secret event in their family history which is unexplained.
